Firefighters are held in high regard around the world. Our nation's firefighters give their all in any crisis. With honor and courage they sacrifice their lives for us. The badge of a fireman is the Maltese Cross. This cross defines the firefighter, a symbol of protection. It means that the fireman who wears this cross is willing to lay down his life for you just as the crusaders sacrificed their lives for their fellow man so many years ago. This Fire & Rescue Santa is dressed in the olden day firefighter uniform. He is ready to protect and be of service to his fellow man.
The Fire & Rescue Santa cradles a Dalmatian puppy. Dalmatians have been the fire dog of choice since the fire department used horses. Dalmatians are breed for endurance and stamina. Dalmatians are not considered fast dogs, but they are able to run for long periods of time without rest. In olden times they were trained to escort the horse drawn engine to the fire scene and prevent stray dogs from interfering. The spotted Dalmatians were easy for the horses to distinguish from the other dogs. Once at the fire scene Dalmatians would continue to protect the horses from other animals. Today, almost every fire station has a Dalmatian and they ride beside the brave firefighters when the alarm sounds.
